The Sweetpea classroom fosters a flexible environment following children’s cues and routines. Teachers form close bonds with each child to best meet their needs. We believe young children need many opportunities to explore their surroundings.
Our teachers provide a safe and responsive environment to give children the opportunity to grow and learn. Through individual weekly lesson plans, teachers incorporate activities to help children’s emotional, physical and cognitive growth including music, art, reading and sensory activities. Teachers also begin baby sign language in the Sweetpea classroom to encourage the use of communication as well as narrating events throughout the day. Baby yoga and stretching support each child’s physical and gross motor development.
Teachers work closely with parents who are welcome to visit the classroom and contact teachers throughout the day. Teachers also document important details about each child’s day such as diapering, eating, sleeping and other activities.
Outside Time All classrooms spend time outside daily in almost every type of weather. The playground is a place where children can practice safe risk assessment. Learning to maneuver through uneven terrain and climbing are especially important skills that toddlers are driven to practice at this age. For preschool children, learning to swing, walking the balance beam, climbing and getting down from the jungle gym, and obstacle courses are excellent ways for children to enhance their gross motor skills. Teachers are there to facilitate safe climbing on various objects and guide children to climb independently instead of placing them at the top or on the ground. Teachers mindfully provide personal interactions that model respect, kindness and empathy towards others in the ways they treat the children. Each child is respected as a capable individual with unique interests and development.
